Some data on Domestic Violence in India
1,00,000 women all over India, aged 15-50, were interviewed and the results of the survey are given below:
Women who didn’t complaint about beating: 55%
about 60% of rural womenfolk does not complaint against battering. However this ratio for Urban women is 47% .
More and more education level of the women less is the tolerance to the battering:
Among illiterate women, 62% justified it; among the graduates only 23% said that they can bear it. Among those who had completed high school, 37%
Women above the age of 15 whose husbands had beaten them at some point or the other:
Among Rural women 23% were beaten at one or other point of time and among Urban 17% were beaten.
The lower the standard of living, the higher the chance of the woman being beaten:
At the Lowest socio-economic level about 29% of women are beaten while in the Well-off sections of society 10% women are likely to be beaten.
Reasons for the Beating:
40% of women were beaten for Neglecting home; 37% were beaten for going out without permission; 34% were beaten for showing disrespect to in-laws; 33% women were beaten in the name of infidelity; 25% were beaten for cooking bad food. Only 7% were beaten over money matters.
The longer the couple has been married, the higher the chance of domestic violence:
Married for less than five years had a chance of beating in only 14% cases, while those married for more than five years had a chance of being beaten 23% .
